A British pattern 1888 MK 1 2nd type Lee Metford bayonet with a 12 inch polished steel blade with numerous inspection stamps, and the maker details of 'Wilkinson London'.
The pommel is stamped '3 E.X' for the 3rd Battalion the Essex regiment.
The 3rd (Reserve) Battalion, Essex Regiment was an infantry unit formed in 1881 from the Essex Rifles Militia, during the Second Boer War, deploying on active duty from March to September 1902. Their deployment was primarily focused on guarding lines of communication and holding blockhouse lines across the region.
Bayonet is in very good condition and comes with its original black leather scabbard.
