Rare British Police Folding Pocket Rattle by Field
A Rare 19th century lead weighted, British Police folding Pocket Rattle by Field
This is the smaller type of rattle with a folding handle used by British Police before the whistle was introduced. The folding handle made it easier for the officer to carry the rattle in his pocket.
The rattle is just over 6 inches long and is stamped 'Field 59 Leman Street' ( Field was a manufacturer and supplier of police equipment during the 19th century and traded from the Leman Street address from 1877 to 1886).
The rattle is also stamped 'POLICE' and a 'WD' inspection stamp (in the 1870s all British police equipment was inspected by the War Department).
A rare piece of British Policing history and in very good original working order.
